Smallest Ausable Wulff

I got some Flies and hooks in the mail today from a friend in Sweden; Mats Olssen.  His small flies really amazed me in their simplicity, size, and my own wonder on all the fish i could catch on them. His blog is : http://tyingandfishingtinyflies.blogspot.com/
Some of the dang-est small hooks i've ever seen. Right away I wanted to bust out the 17/0 and whip up a quickie; the Fran Betters Ausable Wulff. I followed closely the steps on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xG9Cz-hg-9o
dang that guy is fast, perfect every wrap!

  1. Hi Nate!

Nice fly! It's really a challenge to tie flies on these small hooks. Glad that you tried them out right away. Will check out the link to the fly pattern on youtube.

    Your friend,
    Mats Olsson

    1. Thanks again. The video is kinda old, but fun to watch.. he has a great comment along the lines of "many a times I've caught a hundred trout on the same fly" - he was talking g about the ruggedness of his flies. Can you imagine? Ha stay warm, nate

  2. See, I read stuff like this and it makes me wish I could tie. I just can't. I can do the basics (buggers, EHC, Adams, Wulffs, PT, HE, Prince, stuff to keep me going throughout the year), but beyond that, its like a HUGE investment! Your pictures of your tying area are overwhelming! It looks awesome, and I wish I could do it, but man I feel like I already get the evil eye from my wife and I'm just buying cheap, vintage stuff on ebay!

    1. The vintage stuff is best! Universal vise Co, vintage mustad, etc.... most packs of dub are cheap too, maybe 95¢-$2 depending. Some basic tools and a few supplies are all you need. Imagination is really the number 1 key ingredient. I've been tying flies in the Sz 20 range since I was 6. Really, not kidding. I had a father who was a very traditional Catskill dry guy and he taught me very young. So lets see, that's almost 30 years experience and hoarding supplies. Its really taken me a lifetime to collect all that shit. Sometimes Craigslist or eBay sells tying materials by the lot, really cheap. But in the meantime, $10 bux in dead animals, (or roadkill) some basic tools, and your wife's clear nail polish are all you need. Good luck & thanks for commenting!
